Location: Dayton, OH
When Sparks Fly has to be one of the loudest bands on Earth. Hearing them on
CD, one imagines a Kiss-style wall of Marshall stacks. Seeing them rock their
hometown of Dayton, Ohio, complete with hundreds of kids screaming along with
the lyrics, is an experience in itself. You don't go see When Sparks Fly play
and just stand in the back watching. In the sonic tradition of Hot Water Music
and Alkaline Trio, WSF maintains a sound that is still uniquely When Sparks
Fly. The band is also special because they appeal to such a diverse audience.
Pop punk fans like them because they aren't afraid to rock, nor are they afraid
to sing about meaningful things. Hardcore fans like them because they aren't
afraid to write a catchy chorus.
Playing hundreds of shows all over the midwest since their inception in 1999,
WSF shared the stage with acts like Coheed & Cambria, Poison The Well, Breaking
Pangaea, Ultimate Fakebook, The Stereo and Bane. In August 2002 they appeared
at Hessfest in Cleveland with H20, Shai Halud and more. The "We Who Are About
to Die" EP was released by Nice Guy Records in November 2003. It was the band's
most solid, well-produced work to date, and every song on it is an anthem. Following
the release, the band scored a sponsorship from AMP Energy, performed on the
2004 Vans Warped Tour, and performed at Strhessfest 2004 with Thursday, Finch,
Converge, Senses Fail and more. Unfortunately, the band called it quits in 2005
before the world could get a full length album from them. Two members are now
in The Chasing Game.
